The concept of short-term investments is an important one for businesses of all sizes. Short-term cash balances can be managed in three ways: holding cash in the company’s accounts, investing in short-term securities, or using equity financing. Here some examples of long-term investments for a small business.

One of the most popular short-term investments is the iShares S&P 500 ETF (AMEX: IVV). This exchange traded fund is invested in 500 of the largest US companies and can provide investors with exposure to some of the most secure and stable stocks in the market. Share market volatility can be painful in the short-term, but this type of ETF can provide a degree of safety.

Long-term investing is a general term describing a strategy of investing for the long run. It involves making investments with a higher degree of risk, but with the expectation that the long-term returns will be greater than the short-term returns. The idea is that long-term returns can overcome short-term volatility.
