This allows foreign investors to get a two-year green card in return for investment amounts as low as $1.05 million. This can be reduced to $800,000 if the investment is made in a rural area or an area of high unemployment.
Most Direct EB-5 investments are in franchises, hotels, restaurants, and other businesses that require large capital investments. However, these investments come with certain requirements, such as the requirement to create a certain number of jobs or to make a certain amount of improvements to the property or business. Chief among them is the requirement to spend a significant amount of money on the business over a set period of time.
Thus an $800,000 EB-5 stake will now cost the investor $1 million; presumably that will tend to discourage such investments that result, as the investor must now make a greater investment to get the same return.
