Lunar X started as one of the competitors for the Google Lunar X Prize, a competition that offered a $20 million prize for the first privately funded team to land a robotic lander on the moon. Operating as Team Hakuto, Lunar X was one of the few teams to make significant progress towards the goal of landing a rover or lander on the moon.
After the Google Lunar X Prize ended, Lunar X continued their mission to explore the moon and search for resources. The company recently announced that they are getting ready to launch their Hakuto-R lunar lander on 30 November. The lunar lander will be launched on a Japanese rocket and will be accompanied by a NASA lunar orbiter that will search for water ice.
